What Are Dental Sealants?

Posted .

Dental sealants are thin, plastic, natural-looking products that cover your back molars and shield them from tooth decay and other dental issues. The sealant bonds into the crevices and grooves of your teeth, which makes it feel completely natural. This is a great way to ensure a strong and healthy smile because although thorough brushing techniques can remove food particles and plaque from the teeth, they cannot always deeply clean the nooks and crannies of the back teeth.

It is generally recommended that children and teenagers that are between the ages of 6 and 14 protect their permanent molars with dental sealants. This is recommended because children and teens are extremely vulnerable to tooth decay. However, adults who have strong, healthy teeth that do not have tooth decay or dental fillings are also able to benefit from dental sealants.

The process of placing the dental sealant is quick, easy, and painless and it only requires one trip to our office. Once the sealant is placed, it does not require special care. As long as you brush twice a day, floss once a day, rinse your mouth with mouthwash daily, and visit your dentist every six months, your sealant will do its job and prevent tooth decay.
