Your child’s dental sealants are an inexpensive and effective way to protect the biting surface of their back teeth. Trapped food particles and plaque are blocked from having access to the enamel by the durable resin layer, painted on by your dentist. The durable resin is designed to last for several years, but the teeth still need to be included in their oral hygiene routine.

Make sure that your child understands that the sealants are only on biting surfaces of their molars and premolars. All the other surfaces of their teeth are as vulnerable to tooth decay as any other tooth in their mouth. As such they will need to brush all the exposed surfaces, immediately followed by flossing between teeth and along the gum line.

Let them know that they should still brush the biting surface of their molars and premolars. The resin material is very durable and will not wear off from regular brushing alone.
